Veronica Hegelein

Physical oceanographer and planetary scientist

PhD Student

I joined the Planetary Habitability and Technology Lab in Fall 2022 as a Ph.D. student under Dr. Britney Schmidt. My research interests combine oceanography, glaciology, planetary science, and astrobiology through terrestrial analogs to increase our understanding of the cryosphere on Earth and other planetary bodies. My main focus is studying grounding zone processes using oceanographic data collected by the remotely operated vehicle Icefin in glacially-influence marine environments. I’ve worked with data from Erebus Glacier Tongue, Antarctica and Wolstenholme Fjord, Greenland; the latter of which I participated in two field campaigns for in 2025 and 2026 as part of the SSHOWUP project. Additionally, I am a member of the OAST project where I use oceanographic data from extreme environments on Earth to characterize habitability from an astrobiological perspective. Before coming to Cornell, I graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in astrophysics and a minor in atmospheric and oceanic sciences.
