Brandi Revels is a biogeochemist and chemical oceanographer whose research examines the intimate connections between the geosphere and biosphere. Her work focuses on how the bioavailability of key elements regulates life and how biogeochemical feedbacks evolve under changing planetary conditions. She earned her BS in Chemistry and Psychology from the College of Charleston, an MSc in Chemical Oceanography from the University of South Carolina, and a PhD in Isotope Geochemistry from ETH Zürich, where she investigated trace metal cycling in Arctic and Amazonian river systems.
With more than 50 Antarctic expeditions and extensive remote field experience, Brandi previously served as Chief Scientist for Viking Expeditions. In this role, she led vessel-based research programs integrating atmospheric, benthic, biological, and physico-chemical observations using advanced technologies. She now works within the Planetary Habitability and Technology group, supporting polar and oceanographic science operations and advancing the use of emerging technologies to interrogate redox evolution, elemental cycling, and the geochemical signatures of planetary habitability.
A passionate explorer, Brandi has solo-backpacked across more than sixty countries. When not in the field or the lab, she can be found scuba diving, snowboarding, or lecturing on expedition ships around the world. She believes that awe and curiosity can change lives and is committed to sharing that sense of wonder with the world.
